BARSAC


Situated on the left bank of the Garonne and separated from the naming Sauternes, vaster in the South, by a small stream, the Ciron, the Commune of Barsac is allowed to sell its wines either under the Barsac naming, or under that of Sauternes. Ciron plays an essential role in the microclimate of this region. The vineyard is invaded in the morning by the autumnal mist which rises of the stream and bathed by sun in the afternoon, which creates the conditions necessary for the development of Botrytis cinéréa, the noble decay indispensable to the elaboration of syrupy vintage wines. More clayey and gréseux than that of nearby Sauternais, the flat ground of Barsac gives wines which distinguish themselves by their lightness.
